Note: Style of handmade thick knotted carpets or rugs, usually with a floral but occasionally an animal pattern, originating in the Karabakh region, in modern southwestern Azerbaijan and eastern Armenia, just north of the present Iranian border. Karabagh designs and color tend to be more like those of Persian rugs than do those made in other parts of the Caucasus; they may be very similar to designs of Karaja, Iran. Certain Karabagh rugs also resemble those of Shirvan to the north in Azerbaijan. They are characterized as being typically stout and comparatively coarse, made of wool and have longer pile than rugs found elsewhere in Caucasia.
