Note: William Henry Fox Talbot's process to make negatives on paper; the image is formed from silver iodide coated on the base without a binder and is developed. The calotype process produced a translucent original negative image from which multiple positives could be made by simple contact printing. This gave it an important advantage over the daguerreotype process, which produced an opaque original positive that could only be duplicated by copying it with a camera. In the mid-20th century, the term was sometimes used incorrectly for any salted paper or paper negative process.

| Dutch ..... Negatiefprocédés waarbij een stuk papier lichtgevoelig gemaakt wordt met zilverjodide of zilvernitraat en tussen de 10 en 60 seconden wordt belicht. Na afwerking werd het verkregen negatief met was behandeld om het transparant te maken. Door belichting (in contact) van een op dezelfde wijze lichtgevoelig gemaakt papier met dit negatief verkreeg men een positief. Te onderscheiden van 'photogenic drawings', waarbij de afbeelding niet wordt afgedrukt. |

| Portuguese ..... O processo de William Henry Fox Talbot para fazer negativos no papel; a imagem é formada a partir de iodeto de prata revestido na base sem aglutinante e revelada. O processo de calotipagem produziu uma imagem negativa original translúcida a partir da qual múltiplos positivos puderam ser feitos por simples impressão de contato. Isso deu a ele uma vantagem importante sobre o processo de daguerreótipo, que produziu um positivo original opaco que só poderia ser duplicado copiando-o com uma câmera.
