Note: Board game, held to be one of the oldest and most popular, played by two opponents on a checkered board with specially designed pieces of contrasting colors, commonly white and black. Players alternate turns in accordance with fixed rules, each player attempting to force the opponent's principal piece, the King, into checkmate, which is a position where it is unable to avoid capture. It first appeared in India in the 6th century CE; by the 10th century, it had spread from Asia to the Middle East and Europe. It remains popular and the focus of popular amateur and professional competitions. |

German ..... Brettspiel, das als eines der ältesten und beliebtesten gilt. Es wird von zwei Gegnern auf einem karierten Brett mit speziell entworfenen Figuren in kontrastierenden Farben, in der Regel weiß und schwarz, gespielt. Die Spieler wechseln sich nach festen Regeln ab, wobei jeder Spieler versucht, die gegnerische Hauptfigur, den König, schachmatt zu setzen, das heißt in eine Stellung zu zwingen, in der er nicht mehr verhindern kann, dass er geschlagen wird. Es tauchte erstmals im 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr. in Indien auf; im 10. Jahrhundert hatte es sich von Asien aus in den Nahen Osten und nach Europa verbreitet. Es ist nach wie vor beliebt und steht im Mittelpunkt von Amateur- und Profiwettbewerben. |
