In a 1989 interview with Richard Wood Massi, Allan Kaprow claimed to be modeling his activity booklets and films on the evolving form of airplane “escape instructions.” He was something of an expert on the genre, given his frequent trips as a visiting professor, and the comparison is remarkably apt. The aircraft safety card uses photographs in a highly abstract way—not least because too much realism might cause passengers to panic. In this example, a woman floats serenely in a swimming pool.
