In Focus: Tokyo
August 5–December 14, 2014 | The Getty Center
In this exhibition, four contemporary photographers interpret the dense, hyper-real metropolis of Tokyo from four different perspectives. With a snapshot style, Mikiko Hara spontaneously captures portraits of passersby; Daidō Moriyama haunts the neighborhood of Shinjuku for fragments of nightlife; Shigeichi Nagano observes the interactions of community with a perpetually rebuilt environment; and Masato Seto focuses on couples who have escaped the cramped quarters of high-rise living.

Rococo to Revolution: 18th-Century French Drawings from Los Angeles Collections

This exhibition traces the evolution of drawing in France from the early 1700s, when the ornate Rococo style prevailed, to the 1770s and 1780s and the emergence of Neoclassicism, a movement that drew inspiration from ancient Greco-Roman art and culture.

New York based-SITI Company, one of America's leading theater ensembles, presents the emotional story of war, victory, and loss experienced by an imagined Persian court. In this sole surviving Greek tragedy about a historical event—the battle of Salamis in 480 B.C. —Aeschylus glorifies the Athenian victors yet humanizes the defeated Persians, emphasizing the universal impact of war on family and community.

Friday Flights: Hosted by Mikael Jorgensen and Cassandra C. Jones
Friday, August 8, 6:00–9:00 p.m. | The Getty Center
Mikael Jorgensen and Cassandra C. Jones host the fourth and final event in the Friday Flights series. Jorgensen is the keyboardist in the alternative rock band Wilco and releases electronic music under his own name. Jones is a new-media artist with a focus in digital photomontage. Together with friends they present four electronic music projects, an artist's lecture, a video performance piece, and operatic tour of the Getty galleries.
