Tim Hawkinson experiments with drawing, photography, modeling clay, and heat-shrunk Radio Shack bags to concoct a menagerie of animal forms full of surprise, wonder, and sly wit. Immerse yourself in his infectious zoopsias—visual halluciations of animals—and his music-playing Überorgan, one of the largest indoor sculptures ever created.

"Engage in the newness!" was the rallying cry of Japanese artists after World War II. Redefining art for a post-Bomb age, artists staged multimedia events, forged works of anti-art from industrial castoffs, even rejected art altogether to initiate a new "non-art." Explore the many artistic movements that grew from Japan's "desert of ashes" into a vibrant avant-garde art scene. Materials in the exhibition are drawn from Research Institute collections, with the addition of Yoko Ono's interactive Telephone Piece (1964/2007). By courtesy of the artist, you will get to speak to Yoko Ono if she calls during your visit to the exhibition!
