Looking at Los Angeles: John Humble and Phillip Rodriguez (lecture)

Date: Wednesday, April 11, 2007
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Two artists of the Los Angeles landscape, photographer John Humble and documentary filmmaker Phillip Rodriguez, present and discuss their differing approaches to representing this city, with its cultural diversity, ironic juxtapositions, and moments of unexpected beauty. Alex Chadwick, host of National Public Radio's newsmagazine Day to Day, moderates the discussion.

About John Humble
Since the mid-1970s American photographer John Humble has documented greater Los Angeles, creating images that explore the postmodern qualities of America's second largest city. From the concrete channels of the Los Angeles River to brightly colored commercial buildings, his photographs of the built environment—35 of which will be on view in the exhibition A Place in the Sun: Photographs of Los Angeles by John Humble—capture that which is instantly recognizable yet very often overlooked.

About Phillip Rodriguez
Los Angeles native Phillip Rodriguez documents the people and places of Los Angeles on film. His latest feature, Los Angeles Now, offers an atmospheric portrait of life in L.A. and a searching examination of the city's post-Anglo future. Employing creative visuals and computer-generated imagery, Los Angeles Now evokes the city's vast array of moods and rhythms, offering an alternative to the "counterfeit and outmoded images" of the city prevalent in mainstream media.
