This program will introduce secondary-level teachers of literature, social sciences, and other humanities subjects to the history of photojournalism. Focusing on the exhibition Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the Sixties, teachers will learn about photographers who have documented historical events such as war, the Civil Rights movement, and the Depression; as well as social issues, including homelessness and human migration.
Participants are eligible for Los Angeles Unified School District salary points.
Tuesday–Thursday, June 29–July 1 from 9:30 a.m–3:00 p.m.
Friday, July 2 from 9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

This latest installment of our In Focus photography series features images of food by well-known photographers not known for focusing on this subject: Man Ray, Adolphe Braun, Edward Weston, Bill Owens, Martin Parr, and more.
Explore this exhibition online with students in grades 6–12. Adapt the lesson "Still-Life Painting: Arranging Nature—Lesson 1," to have students understand these photographs as still lifes. How are the photographic still lifes similar to or different from the older, painted expressions? Students can further their understanding of the genre and practice watercolor techniques by painting their own still lifes from direct observation.
