| Note: Was a major Cistercian monastery founded by the local lord, Robert FitzHarold in 1147. Prospered until the Dissolution of the Catholic Monasteries instigated by Henry VIII in 1537. Most of the subsidiary buildings were demolished and the main church fell into disrepair; part was restored in the 1630s for use as a parish church of the Church of England. | |
