Modern Dance Costume - Pawnee (photogravure (print); Edward S. Curtis (American photographer 1868-1952); 1930, from negative 1927; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 84.XO.755.4.17)
Note: Taken as part of Edward S. Curtis's forty volume work, "The North American Indian," comprised of photos of Native North Americans and First Nations individuals from 1907 to 1930. This photo is from volume 19, dedicated to cataloging Wichita, Southern Cheyenne, Oto, and Comanche communities. This photo depicts a Pawnee man dressed in regalia (roach headdress, dance bustle, moccasins, bells), posed as if ready to break into dance. The title and the man's dress refer to changes in Native American dance regalia in the early 20th century, with dancers shifting to modern materials (bells, sequins, vibrant fabrics) and more elaborate outfits. This man's outfit recalls an early variation of fancy or war dance regalia.
