Note: Taken as part of Edward S. Curtis's forty volume work, "The North American Indian," comprised of photos of Native North Americans and First Nations individuals from 1907 to 1930. This photo is from volume 15, dedicated to cataloging Shoshoni, Washoe, Kumeyaay, and other California Native communities. This photo depicts a Kutzadika'a woman holding a nearly completed basket. The basket bears a striking resemblance to one woven by Kutzadika'a weaver Leanna Tom (ca. 1850-1965) for a 1924 basket exhibition at Yosemite National Park, California. | |
