| Note: Barrier wall located in the city of Berlin, Germany, separated the country into Eastern and Western sections 1961-1989. Originally made of barbed wire and cinder blocks, it was later replaced by a series of concrete walls topped with barbed wire and guarded with watchtowers, guns, and mines. The Berlin Wall became to symbolize oppressive atmosphere of the Cold War. In 1989, after a series of revolts in nearby Poland and Hungary, international pressure caused the wall to be ultimately dismantled. | |
