ID: 700009529 Page link: http://vocab.getty.edu/page/cona/700009529 | Record Type: Built Work |
Hadrian's Villa (estate (residential complex); patron: Hadrian, Emperor of Rome (Roman emperor, 76-138 CE); between 118-134; Tivoli (Roma, Lazio, Italia, Europe, World, Top of the TGN h...)
Note: Country retreat for the Emperor Hadrian, possibly on the site of property owned by the family of his wife Vibia Sabina. Situated on an elevated plateau south-west of Tivoli. Its complex architecture and wealth of sculpture and mosaics have fascinated artists and scholars since the Renaissance. Hadrian himself probably had a hand in the design of the villa, to judge by a remark made by the great architect Apollodoros of Damascus, who criticized him for drawing ‘pumpkins’ (Dio: Roman History LXIX.iv.2), perhaps a reference to the umbrella domes that constitute one of the villa’s most striking architectural features.
