Note: Former country residence of Lord Cockburn, built as an extension of a 17th century farmhouse. Imitation peel tower added by architect William Henry Playfair in 1839; western wing added by architect David Bruce in 1870. The original farmhouse was completely obscured when the library wing was constructed in 1888 by architects Sydney, Mitchell and Wilson. Bonaly Tower was the venue for frequent meetings of the 'Friday Club," a group of leading Edinburgh literati hosted by Lord Cockburn. The building is now subdivided into apartments.
