Pellissier Building and Wiltern Theatre (multipurpose building; architects: Stiles Clements for Morgan, Walls & Clements; re...; 1930-1931; restoration began i...)
Note: High rise office complex housing a noted theater on the ground floors, located at Wilshire Boulevard and Western, at the western edge of the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. Designed as a vaudeville house by architect Stiles O. Clements, large enough for moviegoers to see it from miles away. At 12 stories, which was the maximum height allowed at the time, the eight-sided structure was the tallest privately owned building in Los Angeles at the time. Its distinctive blue-green glazed terra-cotta tile was chosen by Pellissier's wife as a reminder of the green pastures that previously covered the land; the building itself was originally built on a sheep ranch owned by Germain Pellissier. The effort to save the landmark Pellissier Building and Wiltern Theatre was the LA Conservancy’s first major preservation success. Despite landmark status at the national and local levels, the building’s owner sought to demolish the Art Deco masterpiece in 1979.
