Note: Former structure that was the sporting and social center of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The ruins are incorporated in the modern square, Sultan Ahmet Square. Begun under the Roman emperor Septimius Severus in 203 CE and completed by Constantine in 330.
