Hours of Louis XII (disassembled work; illuminations: Jean Bourdichon; patron: Louis XII; painted in 1498/1499)

Note: The Hours of Louis XII was one of the greatest French manuscripts of its time. A private prayer book, it was painted in 1498/1499 by Jean Bourdichon for the French king Louis XII during a period when the royal court in France was a key center of European art and culture. Bourdichon was court painter to four kings of France (previously to Louis XI and Charles VIII and, subsequently, to Francis I). He probably produced this prayer book to celebrate Louis' coronation in 1498. The manuscript's dramatic miniatures painted by Jean Bourdichon, a powerful court artist, are startling in their originality. By the end of the 17th century, the book's original body of around 36 large miniatures was removed and its text broken up. Miniatures and text fragments found their way into various collections. Formerly was incorrectly known as the Hours of Henry VII, whose daughter Mary Tudor (1496-1533) was the third wife of Louis XII, and may have brought the book to England when she returned home as a widow in 1515.
