Note: Napoleon III planned to build a Second Empire version of the Arc de Triomphe here, to the glory of his military victories (at the square where a previous ephemeral monument to Louis XIV had stood). In 1862, a 30-metrer model of the arc, created by Victor Baltard was erected. The final project was never accomplished.
