Note: Monumental tomb, one of the most famous buildings of antiquity, completed ca. 350 BCE at Halicarnassus in Asia Minor in honor of Mausolus, Satrap of Caria (reg 377-353 BCE), and his wife Artemisia (died 351 BCE).The structure was designed by the Greek architects Satyros and Pythius of Priene. Described as 43 m (140 ft) tall, consisting of a high rectangular podium supporting an Ionic colonnade surmounted by a pyramid of 24 steps crowned by a quadriga bearing a statue of Mausolus. One of his Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Construction began ca. 367 BCE; completed after the death of Mausolus 353 and wife Artemisia in 351. It was destroyed by successive earthquakes from the 12th to the 15th century. | |
