| Note: Section of the Louvre palace on the site of the Medieval Louvre fortress of King Philippe Auguste. When the medieval fortress was razed in 1546, King Francis I had built a larger royal residence to which additions were added by almost every subsequent French monarch, including notably by King Louis XIV, who resided at the Louvre until his departure for Versailles in 1678. | |
