A Pelican Feeding her Young (folio (leaf); unknown Franco-Flemish; about 1270; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; Ms. Ludwig XV 3, fol. 72)
Note: Place created: Thérouanne ?, France (formerly Flanders). A pelican sheds its blood to revive its young, an allegory for God saving humankind through the sacrifice of Christ. The symbolism of the mother pelican feeding baby pelicans is rooted in pre-Christian folklore, which maintained that in time of famine, the mother pelican struck her own breast with her beak to cause bleeding, to thus feed her young.
