Mona Lisa (painting (visual work); Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988); 1983; Ambrous T. Young Collection )
Note: Basquiat's answer to Warhol's Dollar Bill and Mona Lisa paintings. The portrait at center, Leonardo's Mona Lisa, overlaps the dollar bill, obscuring what would be the face of George Washington. The meaning is that art and money are two different currencies, even different worlds, which can be converted only with difficulty. The artist was known for lavishly spending money; in this painting he compares love of money and his faith in art.
