Note: This sculpture group adorns the eastern façade of the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. It depicts a specific episode from the French Revolution when the National Convention summoned the volunteer army to march against the Prussians and Austrians advancing on the French frontier at the Battle of Valmy in September 1792. The title La Marseillaise refers to the marching song written in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle that in 1795 became one of the first French Republic's two national anthems.
