Record Type: Movable Work
Freston Tower, Suffolk (drawing (visual work); Edward Dayes (English, 1763 - 1804) (English Artist); about 1785; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2011.11)
Note: Under a patchwork of clouds, a local leans on a fence while cattle graze nearby. A view to the right - past a prominent tree - shows the distance across a stretch of water and completes the carefully composed rural backdrop. Yet the principal subject of the watercolor is the tower which dominates the tranquil scene. Built in 1578 by the wealthy Ipswich merchant Thomas Gooding, the six-storey structure occupies a position with commanding views of the River Orwell, and still exists today as a Landmark Trust building. The tower was probably built to provide early warning of the arrival of Gooding's ships in Ipswich, but could perhaps be related to the progress of Queen Elizabeth to the town in 1579.
