A View of Civitella from the Serpentara next to Olevano (drawing (visual work); Heinrich Reinhold (German, 1788 - 1825) (German Artist); 1821; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.71)
Note: The drawing represents a view of Civitella San Paolo from the Serpentara, a wild oak grove situated in the proximity of Olevano Romano, in Latium; the city of Civitella is visible in the distance, perched on a mountain top. The sheet was apparently intended as an autonomous work of art although its great precision suggests that it might have been executed with the idea that it might serve, at a later date, as the basis for a painting. The fine pencil work with parallel hatching is typical of Reinhold's landscape drawings. The draftsman went repeatedly to Olevano, near Rome, with Joseph Anton Koch, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld as well as Ludwig Richter and depicted the region on a number of occasions. He found much inspiration there. Indeed, according to Ludwig Richter, "Reinhold sat up there almost every day, without leaving the spot, until late in the evening. His drawings in graphite were cleanly executed in folio size, often endowed with appropriate figures, the viewpoint was always splendidly chosen, so that one got a complete whole before oneself; the execution was masterly and confident, with a great understanding of forms."Heinrich Reinhold studied in Dresden from 1804 to 1807, and then moved to Vienna, where he studied at the academy until 1809. During the French occupation of the city in 1809, Vivant Denon brought Reinhold to Paris to work on a series of engravings about Napoleon. Following Napoleon's fall, Reinhold returned to Vienna, where he met Ferdinand Olivier and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. In 1819, Reinhold went to Rome with Johann Christian Ehrard. Reinhold remained in Italy for the rest of his short life and travelled in search of inspiration for his landscapes. He ventured to Naples and even Sicily. Reinhold never returned to Germany due to his untimely death in 1825.
