| Fridolin Assists with the Holy Mass (drawing (visual work); Peter Fendi (Austrian, 1796 - 1842) (Austrian Artist); 1833; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.61) | |
| Note: Fendi was in high favor at the Imperial court, especially for portraiture, and did a lot of work for Empress Maria Carolina and Archduchess Sophie (the mother of Emperor Franz Joseph I). A letter by Fendi of 1835 documents that the Archduchess suggested that he make the cycle of 30 watercolor illustrations to the poems of Schiller. Bound in a splendid binding and housed in the imperial collection of paintings, these became some of his most famous and best loved works. Some were made into prints. | |
