Rocky Outcropping (recto); Rocky Forest with Strollers (verso) (drawing (visual work); Ernst FerdinOehme (German, 1797 - 1855) (German Artist); about 1825; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2009.27)
Note: The drawing is a study of a rocky outcropping with grasses growing in its crevices, silhouetted against a brilliant blue sky. The artist has drawn it with penetrating clarity and an almost modernist approach to its abstract, crystalline structure. The brilliant blue of the sky with the gray rock mass silhouetted against it create a powerful, geometric formal arrangement.Oehme's teacher in Dresden was Caspar David Friedrich, and the latter's influence is plainly visible in Oehme's spare, elemental treatment of the rock mass. Although he went to Rome in 1822-25, Oehme told artist-friends such as Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld that he was truly inspired by German landscape. Oehme's regard for the sublime, pure and quasi-religious forces of Germanic nature, as seen in the proposed watercolor, clearly show the profound and lasting impact of Friedrich. Oehme likely made the proposed watercolor in 1825, on his return from Rome to Dresden, via a stop in the Swiss and Tyrolean Alps to make watercolors. It is evidently a sketchbook page and shows a lovely scene of a forest on the verso. He possibly finished the rock study with watercolors when back in the studio.
