Head of a Man (drawing (visual work); Friedrich Overbeck (German painter, 1789 - 1869); about 1820 - 1825; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.11)
Note: Precisely executed, the proposed sheet is a superlative example of Overbeck's draftsmanship in his preferred medium of black chalk. The drawing dates to Overbeck's Roman period when the Nazarene artist was deeply engrossed in a study of Italian religious art of the 14th and 15th centuries. The prominent contour lines and regular disposition of hatching together with a high degree of abstraction and strong simplification of individual likeness is typical of Overbeck's distillation of the Italianate style, and stylistic comparisons can be found in his Portrait of a Youth in Dresden and Portrait of Marchese Massimi in Berlin. Overbeck appears to have made this drawing as a study of expression, and the focused gaze of the man and slightly open mouth convey a sense of astonishment. As such the proposed sheet was mostly likely made in preparation of a painting much like the artist's Head of a Young Woman and Head of an Old Woman in Berlin.
