Note: Made when Linnell was only 21 years old, this watercolor is one of a number produced on a month-long sketching trip in north Wales in August 1813. It captures the Welsh landscape in a medley of greens and grays, the composition anchored by a prominent tree. Such works were intended as memoirs of countryside scenes that would feed his inspiration and provide useful material for works Linnell would exhibit at the Society of Painters in Oil and Water-Colours in London. Having never previously travelled beyond Sussex, he found the Snowdonian landscape captivating, as he later recalled: I have never visited Wales since but that one month's study supplied me with material for life.
