Record Type: Movable Work
Seven Men on the Gallows (drawing (visual work); Unknownmaker, Bolognese School (Artist); about 1630; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2008.24)
Note: The drawing is a quick but powerful sketch - almost certainly made on the spot - of seven men hanging on a gallows. A number of the convicts still cling to rosary beads even though their necks have been broken by the rope. The sketch belongs to the tradition, pioneered by the Carracci in late sixteenth-century Bologna, of recording subjects from daily life. Such works captured reality, while recognizing the pathos or emotion in a particular scene. Several drawings of hangings by the Carracci and contemporary artists are known, but this sheet is differentiated by the artist's inscriptions underneath the figures recording their crimes: from left to right, head of thieves, street assassin, robber of two shops, and (on the right) four counterfeiters of money hanging together.
