Coast View with the Abduction of Europa (oil painting (visual work); Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée) (French, 1604 or 1605 ? - ...; 164(5)?; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2007.32;)
Note: According to the tale told by Ovid (Metamorphoses, II, 833-75), Jupiter set out to seduce Europa, the beautiful princess of Tyre. Assuming the form of a magnificent white bull, he joined Agenor's herd of cattle on the seashore, where she cavorted with her attendants. Charmed by his beauty and docility, they festooned him with flowers and Europa, captivated by his gentleness, climbed on his back. Jupiter then spirited Europa away across the waves to Crete. Claude follows Ovid's account closely, setting the scene as if on an outdoor stage, against the glorious backdrop of a fortified harbor. The strong, cool light from the rising sun, hidden behind dense trees at left, streams across the figures in the foreground. Europa, dressed in delicate lilac and vivid blue, sits demurely on the bull's back, "her right hand grasp[ing] the bull's horn, the other rest[ing] on his back" (Met. II, 875). Four attendants adorn her and the bull with wreaths and festoons of flowers. A breeze wafts their scarves and ruffles the dark waters of the bay. Goats and the herd of cattle graze peacefully nearby. The bustling port city of Tyre glitters through the misty atmosphere in the distance. The distinctive square tower (right), stone bridge with two round towers (center, right), and the imposing watch tower, with its minutely described rusticated base and partially crenellated top, are all familiar architectural features from Claude's landscapes. Numerous small figures populate the port and fill the rigging of ships at anchor. Claude enthusiastically described the central galleon in detail, from the carved and gilt equine decoration around its base to the striated structure of its prow, myriad rigging, industrious crew and flags adorned with gold fleur-de-lys.
