Portrait of Théophile Van Robais (drawing (visual work); Jean-Baptiste Perronneau (French, 1715 - 1783) (French Artis...; 1770; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2005.52)
Note: Before a creamy, beige-green background, Théophile Van Robais meets the viewer's eye directly with a measured and controlled gaze. Rather than filling the composition with genre details, the only hint at a setting appears at right, with the outline of a simple, velvet-backed chair visible in the shadows. Instead, the sitter - an epitome of ancien régime masculinity - wholly commands the composition, particularly with his solid outline, which draws attention to Van Robais's broad chest and secure pose. The tilt of his head and the slight turn of his shoulders from the picture plane gracefully enliven the composition, while his folded arms move with confident poise into the beholder's space, and his slightly parted lips suggest that the sitter is in the act of speaking, rather than sitting passively. The delicate surface of the pastel, which accentuates his closely shaven skin and neatly powdered, single-curl wig, further convey his refinement and elegance.
