Note: Alfonso d'Avalos (1502-1546), born of an illustrious Spanish-Neapolitan family, served as captain general in the Imperial army of Charles V, playing a key role in crucial campaigns against the French. In 1532, he was honored with the Order of the Golden Fleece, and was subsequently appointed governor of Milan and commander general of the Emperor's forces in Italy. One of the most cultivated grandees of his age, Avalos and his wife, Maria of Aragon, niece of King Ferdinand of Naples, maintained a sumptuous court that patronized artists and writers, including Titian and Pietro Aretino. In Titian's formal, 3/4-length portrait, Avalos is encased in an elaborate and beautifully wrought suit of armor befitting the imperial condottiere (the Golden Fleece hanging proudly from his neck). The artist, however, has endowed this warrior with the pensive seriousness of a contemplative man; the active and meditative modes, essential polarities for the Renaissance, are thus combined here to ennoble the sitter. Suggesting the transitory quality of the moment, a page hands him his helmet as if he were about to return to his military duties. | |
