Portrait of George de Ligne Gregory (1740 - 1822) (drawing (visual work); John Russell, R.A. (British, 1745 - 1806) (British Artist); 1793; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2001.77)
Note: The subject, shown somberly yet richly dressed, alert yet seated at ease -- embodies Russell's ideal of decorum where the sitter's action and attitude are appropriate to his age, and the picture's embellishments are governed by the rules of propriety. Hat, cravat and exuberantly powdered hair are dramatic attributes befitting the middle-aged High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. The bravura application of pastel characteristic of the portrait illustrates Russell's published and unpublished investigations into the medium. The masterful interplay of varied flesh tones with blues demonstrates Russell's principle of translucency, as he believed the beauty of pastel depended on one color showing itself through or between the other. The portrait's lovely velvet blacks are the result of Russell's successful experiments with lampblack to produce a soft, dense crayon that allowed for thin, opaque coverage yet was grainy enough to brilliantly scatter light. And it can hardly be an accident that the artist who recommends making large quantities of the white used to paint powdered hair because it is the same substance as hair powder has so lavishly scattered it in the hat, on the collar and through the hair of George de Ligne Gregory.
