Note: In the shelter of a luxuriant park adorned with a monumental fountain, two spirited couples perform an informal country dance to the tune of a rustic bagpipe. Moving in a circle with their arms intercrossed, they perform a figure known as a "moulinet," after "moulin" or windmill. To either side, other couples play out the game of love in its various stages of anticipation, entreaty, and reward. Several onlookers and children, a girl with flowers, and two dogs attend the scene. Harmoniously orchestrated through gesture, pose, and glance, the rhythm of Lancret's sinuous composition assumes a dance-like cadence of its own.
