Portrait of William Burton Conyngham (drawing (visual work); Anton Raphael Mengs (German, 1728 - 1779) (German Artist); about 1754 - 1755; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2001.82)
Note: William Burton Conyngham was about 21 years old and on the Grand Tour in Rome when Mengs painted this portrait. The sitter is shown in 1/2 length and 3/4 view, boldly turning into the light, clasping a sumptuous velvet cloak that dramatically enfolds his arm and shoulders. Mengs conveys William Burton's youthful energy through his powerful torsion of pose, alert upturned gaze, and backswept curling hair. The young Irishman's ruddy complexion and bright Titian hair are vividly set off against the pure white and bright blue of his open-necked shirt. The intense, saturated colors of clothing and flesh, the "colori chiari" so praised by Mengs, brilliantly harmonize with the cascades of duller, soft red velvet and complement the subtle yellows and greens of the background.
