Moonlit Landscape with a View of the New Amstel River and Castle Kostverloren (oil painting (visual work); Aert van der Neer (Dutch painter, 1603-1677) ; 1647; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2000.27)
Note: Behind the radiant filaments of cloud, the rising moon casts a fiery glow across the landscape which is mirrored in the surface of the water. Its subdued luminescence backlights the trees and etches their silhouettes with silver and orange highlights. The powerful light enables two men to fish and casts long shadows from the two figures enjoying the view at right. The warm reflective light of the moon contrasts with the brilliant radiance of the stars cast over the night sky.In addition to the spectacular rendering of a clearing night sky, van der Neer's Moonlit Landscape accurately captures the marshy features of the area of the Nieuwe Amstel River eulogized by many poets and landscape painters. At the heart of the composition lies a free rendering of one of the primary landmarks along the river, an imposing house with a tower. Its name, "Kostverloren," refers to the "lost earnings" associated with the reconstruction and repairs to the building.
