Cimon and Pero: "Roman Charity" (oil painting (visual work); Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725 - 1805) (French Artist); about 1767; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 99.PA.24)
Note: The story of Cimon and Pero is recounted by the ancient Roman historian, Valerius Maximus, in his Memorable Acts and Sayings of the Ancient Romans. Sentenced to death, the aged Cimon was forced to starve in prison before his execution. His daughter Pero secretly visited her father to nourish him at her own breast. Her selfless devotion was the highest exemplum of filial piety. This subject, popular in the 17th century, was dramatically painted by such major artists as Rubens and Murillo. In the late 18th century, the subject was revived by Greuze amongst others. Known as "Roman Charity", it served as an august antique prototype to the themes of filial piety made more familiar through the form of contemporary genre.
