Lamp in the Form of a Comic Mask (oil lamp; Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); 75 - 125; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 96.AQ.193)

Note: The body of the lamp is formed as a comic mask set on a low turned foot. The nozzle emerges below the beard of the mask and has a tip of almost triangular form. It is surrounded by a flat raised border, and the space on the top of the nozzle between the lamp body and the small, round mouth, is decorated with a pointed leaf. The mask type is that of the "Leading Slave," a sly and resourceful stock character in numerous comedies. His open, upturned mouth is fringed with a finely incised semicircular beard and serves as the filling hole. Most of the hair is covered with a kerchief, from which short tassels of corkscrew curls emerge at the sides. The headdress is crowned with a wreath of ivy leaves and berries shown in high relief, which continues below to adorn the zone where the handle is attached. A fragment of the upswept loop handle survives. It is set low on the body and is a stylized vine form with a turned-back leaf. Location Creation: Italy (?)
