Portrait of André-Antoine Bernard, called Bernard de Saintes (drawing (visual work); Jacques-Louis David (French, 1748 - 1825) (French Artist); July 24, 1795; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 95.GB.37)
Note: A lawyer by profession, André-Antoine Bernard (1751 - 1819) was elected president of the tribunal of his native city, Saintes, in 1790. The following year he was sent to Paris to participate in the Assemblée législative, where he was known as Bernard de Saintes. In 1792, he became a deputy at the Convention nationale and joined the faction of the Montagnards, a group that was noted for its radical democratic views and that controlled the French government between 1793-94. During the Thermidorian reaction, following the riots of Premier Prairial, Bernard was arrested at the end of May 1795. He was imprisoned with David, a fellow-member of the Committee of Public Safety, in the Quatre Nations, where the artist drew his portrait on July 24th, 1795. Bernard received amnesty in October of the same year, returning then to Saintes and to his legal career. In 1816, he was exiled for voting in favor of the death of Louis XVI, as was David. Bernard then spent some time in Belgium before leaving for the United States, where he died in 1819 (the inscription on the old backing incorrectly states that the place and date of his death was Funchal in 1818; he was in fact shipwrecked there en route to the United States, but survived and was able to continue his journey).
