Note: The youthful saint John the Baptist is seated in the wilderness and holds a reed cross in his left hand, while with his right one he caresses the lamb, symbol of Christ and his future sacrifice. The heavy lines and cross-hatching are typical of Murillo's work in the mid-1650s.

Inscriptions: Secondary Inscription: Inscribed in brown ink at the bottom, "Bartolome Murillo f[acieb]at". [Jonathan Brown proposed that this inscription- which appear on other Murillo drawings- were made by a 17th-century collector, possibly Nicholas Omazur, a Flemish merchant living in Seville and an important patron of Murillo]
