Reclining Male Nude (drawing (visual work); Francesco Salviati (Italian, 1510 - 1563) (Italian Artist); about 1550; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 86.GB.574)
Note: The boy's arc-shaped form, twisted torso, arm, and neck derive from an antique sculpture, the "Hercules Chiaramonti' (Rome, Vatican, formerly Museo Chiaramonti), while the head and the right forearm are Salviati's imaginative reconstruction of the original sculpture. The employment of stumping produces a smooth, slick surface whose jewel-like beauty complements the ornamental curvature of the body.
