| Note: A single figure, possibly intended by Friedrich as a self portrait, stands head bowed, in silent reverie before a megalithic tomb. Set in a mist-shrouded autumnal meadow, the scene is lit by the delicate light of a rising sickle moon. An archway formed by the bare wintery trees of the middleground opens on to a distant band of trees in full leaf, the outlines of their forms emerging from a dense fog. | |
