Reisaltaar (portable altar; Unknown Japanese; 1800/1900; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-701; RM001.collect.1596)
Note: At the centre of this tiny shrine is a figure of the Buddhist divinity Bishamon, one of the gods of luck. He is accompanied by his assistants, Kichijôten and Zennishi, whose likenesses are painted on the inside of the doors. Besides being a god of luck, Bishamon is one of the guardians of the four winds, the protectors of the Buddhist faith. Each guardian protects one of the four winds. Bishamon is the guardian of the north. In Sanskrit, the language of Buddhism, his name is Vaishravana, and in Japan he is also known as Tamonten. The shrine was made in Japan during the nineteenth century.
