| Cong (cong (ceremonial vessel); Unknown Chinese; 3000/2000 BCE; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-51; RM001.collect.1874) | |
| Note: A square-based cylinder, with a round hole drilled through it lengthways. Relief lines have been added to the corners. The pattern seems abstract at first, but faces can be discerned: horizontal and vertical lines suggest eyes, nose and hair. This is a 'cong'. The cong is approximately 5,000 years old and originates from a prehistoric culture in China, the Liangzhu culture. A cong was a gift to the dead, sometimes one of many buried along with the deceased: graves have been found which contained some 30 congs. The cong is made of jade, a precious stone which is hard and therefore difficult to work. | |
