Landschap met waterval (easel painting (painting by form); Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael (Haarlem 1629-06 - Amsterdam 16...; ca. 1668; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); SK-C-210; RM001.collect.5332)

Note: The artist Jacob van Ruisdael specialised in painting 'landscapes [...] in which one sees water cascading from one rock to the next, until finally it murmurs through valleys and lowlands', as described by the historian Arnold Houbraken in 1721. Houbraken also remarked on the fact that the artist's name, Ruisdael - which roughly translates as 'murmuring valley' - matched the content of his paintings. Ruisdael often included people in his landscapes. Here a shepherd is wading through the river, on the left, with his flock. There are also several people reposing under the trees. Although Ruisdael may have seen this particular waterfall on his travels, most of his paintings were based largely on fantasy. The real counterpart of this landscape has never been found.
