Jizo-bosatsu (painting (visual work); Unknown Japanese ; 1250 - 1300; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-162; RM001.collect.1659)
Note: Standing on a lotus flower hovering over the sea is a Buddhist saint called Jizo Bosatsu who, to judge from the trail of cloud, appears to be descending. Jizo, protector of women, children and travellers, has been honoured in Japan since the Nara period (645-794). Jizo Bosatsu is a bodhisattva, one who has transcended the cycle of reincarnation. He holds two attributes: a beggar's staff and a jewel. In Japan, wealthy connoisseurs often collected paintings. These would be displayed in a special niche in the wall, the tokonoma. Being especially delicate, these paintings were regularly alternated.
