Note: The canal cuts straight through the polder landscape, and runs on diagonally towards the horizon. On the right, the composition is complemented with the diagonal lines of the hedge and a road bordered by a neat row of trees. All the lines lead to a distant point - a vanishing point obscured from view, behind the houses in the foreground. This work was painted between 1817 and 1818 by Pieter Gerardus van Os. It is a view from the attic window of his patron's country house in 's-Graveland, a village in Het Gooi.
