Note: In one hand this sumptuously clothed child is holding a pair of cherries. Settled on the other is a goldfinch. A fourfold gold chain with a medallion is draped about the neck like a sash. The inscription on the painting - AETATIS SUAE 18 MENS Ao 1604 - reveals the subject to be a child that was eighteen months old in 1604. This may therefore be Louis of Nassau, son of Stadholder Maurice and Margaretha van Mechelen. Having been born in 1602, Louis would have been the right age. Moreover, the medallion the infant is wearing is clearly recognisable as one struck in 1605 in honour of Maurice. One side - visible here - shows Maurice's portrait en profil while the other shows his coat of arms: a pollarded tree with a new shoot. The painting is attributed to Daniël van den Queborn.
