Note: "Nude and moon" is one of a series of reclining female nudes painted between 1954 and 1964. The full impact of Miller's modernist training together with his esoteric spiritualist beliefs is felt in this work. The figure and other elements are carefully laid out according to geometric divisions based on the proportions of the golden section, while forms are reduced to a basic geometric vocabulary of circle and rectangle, straight and curved line. The simplicity and tight geometry of the composition imbue the figure with a sense of monumentality and timelessness. Miller's quest for what he termed 'Unity,' the artistic expression of his belief in a cosmic unity, is articulated through the dense grid of ruled lines that divide the canvas. This grid extends to and, by implication, beyond the edges of the painting, and literally and symbolically connects and unifies all elements of the image - nude, moon and the space in between - into a harmonious and exquisitely ordered composition.
